Hello blog, long time no see. (again)
I've been discovering a lot of really amazing, off-the-beaten-path musicians lately that I had to brag about somewhere.
First of all, Sxip Shirey, a friend of Amanda Fucking Palmer's who opened for Evelyn Evelyn during their tour, just released a new album. The first two tracks were all I needed to convince me to by the album. It's so abstract and surreal and amazing. Sleeping to it tonight should create some interesting results. You can listen to the whole thing streaming here before you buy: http://sxip.bandcamp.com/
Jason Webley, another amazing musician-friend of Amanda Palmer (sensing a theme here?) is excellent. I'd always assumed he was good but now that I'm really listening to his music I find it's hard to stop. He's here: http://jasonwebley.bandcamp.com/album/only-just-beginning
And I recommend looking up the youtube video of him and Amanda Palmer playing a duet of "Icarus." It's probably my favourite thing ever.
Prince Poppycock, if you don't watch America's Got Talent (which I won't hold against you), is an amazing opera singer slash androgynous drag queen. He's easily the most fabulous person I've ever seen. I didn't find him through Amanda Palmer, but while researching him I did find out that he once opened for the Dresden Dolls. If only I could go back in time to that night. :( I started watching AGT just so I could vote the maximum thirty times a night for him. If you ignore all the links I'm posting here, please at least watch this video:
One last one for you. Kim Boekbinder, who used to do a fantastic sister act called "Vermilion Lies" with her sister Zoey, is releasing her solo album soon. It's a bit confusing how it all works (at some point I'm supposed to be receiving a limited Molly Crabapple-designed T-shirt, but the album release date keeps changing), but she's a very good musician, so hopefully it'll be worth the wait. :) You should listen to the Vermilion Lies song "Global Warming;" it makes me smile every time I hear it. Here's her web site: http://www.theimpossiblegirl.com/
Oh, and yes, I heard about her through good ol' AFP. They've toured together a few times and I have a poster.
School starts in just over a month, and if I don't get the scholarship I'm hoping for I'll be taking out a loan so I can buy myself an affordable but powerful laptop. Cross your fingers for me!
